For AI agents

AI agents and tools can use NPReq data through the NPReq API, with npreq-mcp: a small MCP server that runs on your own computer and calls the API with your own API key. MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is how tools such as Claude Code, Claude Desktop and Codex connect to outside data.

Not for clinical or licensing decisions. Always confirm a requirement with the state board of nursing before you apply, renew, or change how you practice.

Set it up

What it gives your AI tool

Five read-only tools. Each makes exactly one request to the NPReq API and writes nothing:

  • get_data_version: which version of the data the API serves, and when it was updated.
  • list_states: the 56 jurisdictions (the 50 states, DC and five territories).
  • get_state: one jurisdiction’s practice authority, licensure, renewal, prescribing and board details.
  • get_state_ce: one jurisdiction’s continuing education (CE) requirements.
  • search_requirements: a search across all jurisdictions.

Every fact comes with the official source it was taken from and the version of the data, so your AI tool can cite them.

Set it up

  • Claude Code: the npreq plugin runs the server and keeps your key in your system’s credential store.
  • Claude Desktop, Codex, the OpenAI Agents SDK and other MCP clients: run npreq_mcp.py as a local server, with your key in the server’s environment.

The step-by-step setup for each is in the API documentation. You need an NPReq API key (see pricing) and Python 3.10 or newer.

Your key

  • Your key stays on your computer, in your AI tool’s settings for the server. Never put it in a prompt or a chat message.
  • The server sends it only to the NPReq API, to get a short-lived access token, and never writes it to its output, its log or a tool result.
  • Do not put patient or other personal information in a search: the search text is sent to the API.

Limits and terms

Each tool call is an ordinary API call: it counts against your plan’s limits, and the NPReq API Terms apply. Your AI tool may use the data at run time to answer your question, and each answer shown to a person may cover at most five jurisdictions. What we receive from these calls is in the NPReq Privacy Notice.

AI agents and other automated tools must use the API and must not scrape this site (see the site terms).
